Girona (in Spanish, Gerona; in Catalan and officially, Girona) is a Spanish province located in the northeast of the autonomous community of Catalonia. It has a population of 761,947 inhabitants (INE 2018), and its capital is Girona, where 13.16% of the total population lives. It borders the provinces of Barcelona and Lleida, as well as France and the Mediterranean Sea, and includes an exclave surrounded by France, the municipality of Llívia. In this province you can do just about everything; it is one of the best areas in the region. You can relax on spectacular beaches, enjoy stunning views from beautiful mountains, visit charming medieval towns, and even stroll through a volcanic region. Some places you simply cannot miss are Cap de Creus, the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula; the volcanic area of La Garrotxa; Sant Pere Pescador (a wonderful little town); Lake Banyoles; Figueres; Cadaqués; and Tossa de Mar, among other spectacular destinations. As for activities, be sure to try the cuisine of the Costa Brava—it will amaze you; visit a winery in the Empordà; see the village that appears in the film “Spanish Affair” (“Ocho apellidos vascos”), Monells; go scuba diving in the Cap de Creus area; attend the Indianos Fair in Begur; or enjoy a local festival during the month of August.
